  • What technologies or measures do you support?
    We currently support all technologies across home and building efficiency, electrification, weatherization, and electric vehicles. Please contact us if you have a pressing need for a specific technology.
  • What regions do you cover?
    Our app supports all of California and our roadmap includes core incentive states such as Colorado, New York, and Massachusetts. If you have a pressing need for a specific state/region, please contact us.
  • How is this different from other websites that provide information on incentives?
    Our web application and API helps you work through the complexity of many programs simultaneously so that you can have more confidence in your customers' eligibility and savings potential for incentives. Other websites provide static information that still hands you the work of understanding each program's jargon.
  • Can I provide feedback on the API?
    Absolutely! We’d love your feedback, feature requests, or bugs you’ve found. Please feel free to let us know by emailing support@pencilenergy.com.
  • How does authentication and authorization work?
    Every client making requests to the API is required to have API keys. You can register for API keys here. The Pencil API uses basic HTTP authentication in which API keys are required to be passed in the headers of each request.
  • How do I get started with the API?
    You can get started by requesting API keys here or by emailing support@pencilenergy.com. You can also view our API documentation, which has more information on how to get started integrating with the API. Please note that the API documentation is only available by request.   • Are there any best practices or optimization tips for using the Pencil API?
    Search We support hundreds of different technology types from mini-split ductless heat pumps to electric bicycles, just to name a few. While we’ll be making search simpler, particularly via the technology parameter, over the next few months we recommend that you familiarize yourself with the technology categories we support to return the most relevant results. Eligibility Requirements To understand precisely what project requirements must be satisfied to be eligible for an incentive program, look no further than the /projects/{projectId}/incentives endpoint. Address information We support many different granularities of location information. While providing a full address (street number, street, city, and zip code) will provide the most precise and relevant results, we also accept lat/long coordinates, partial addresses, city, or zip codes only as well. Use caution when making a request to any location less detailed than an address or lat/long coordinate as some areas include more than one administrator (for instance, zip codes occasionally have two or more electric utilities that service addresses within those areas).
  • What are the key features and capabilities of the API?

  • What is the roadmap for future updates and enhancements?
    We’re constantly adding new programs and regions to our database of incentives. We’re also working on a number of new features including more precise incentive value estimates, making search easier, and notifications for program changes, which should be rolling out over the next few months.
  • What kind of support or SLA is offered?

  • How do I reset my password on Pencil's web platform?
    To reset your password on Pencil's web platform, go to the login page and click on the 'Forgot Password' link. Follow the instructions to reset your password via email or security questions. Make sure to create a strong and secure password to protect your account.
  • What payment methods does Pencil accept?
    We accept payments from all major credit cards, as well as Apple Pay and Google Pay. Please reach out to support@pencilenergy.com for more information.
  • How can I manage my billing information?

  • What is a 'project?'
    A project in the context of Pencil's web application and our API describes the combination of what (measures intended to be installed) and where (a property's address).
